Adax PacketAMC Provides Front-End Processing
of Layer Two Protocols

8th February 2010, Reading, UK- (Virtual Press Office) – Adax, a leading provider of telecommunications signaling equipment, will be displaying the latest addition to their IP product portfolio, the PacketAMC (PktAMC), at the Mobile World Congress. Utilizing the embedded services of the industry-leading Cavium family of multi-core processors, the PktAMC handles front-end processing of basic layer two switching as well as hardware acceleration for intelligent networking, control plane, security, QoS and wireless applications. This allows highly available, high performance carrier grade transport from the edge to core networks to be delivered over the PktAMC’s four 1Gigabit Ethernet connections.

The PktAMC can also be combined with the Adax PacketRunner (APR), meaning that front-end processing of basic layer two switching is handled by the PktAMC, with advanced layer two switching and routing, MPLS-TP, PBB-TE, high availability and management taking place on the APR. In addition, when used together, the APR and PktAMC can deliver a sub-system that provides an ideal foundation for NGN, IMS, VoLGA, UMA and Femtocell applications.

When the PktAMC is combined with the APR they provide high performance delivery of control and data plane services from one tightly coupled resource. This removes contention on the chassis backplane, allowing multiple IP flows to be processed on the APR, and processed packets to be available for immediate transport to system application servers or the IP network.

“The challenges faced when trying to improve network performance, by moving IP-networks from a ‘best effort’ basis to carrier grade reliability and responsiveness, are significant,” explains Robin Kent, Director of European Operations at Adax. “Whether this can be achieved is dependent on the performance and reliability of the underlying packet processing, which is something that the APR and PktAMC can provide.”

The PktAMC can be used within a broad range of ATCA legacy and emerging network elements found in today’s networks such as MSCs, MGs, x-CSCFs, HSSs, meaning that it can be used within existing networks and be fully compatible with future developments in signaling technology.
