NXP Software provides mobile video player for Chunghwa Telecom multi-screen Media-on-Demand (MOD) service
System supplier Ericsson integrates LifeVibes QuickPlayer for Android devices as part of a complete next generation multi-screen solution
September 10th 2012, Eindhoven (
Virtual Press Office) : NXP Software today announced that its LifeVibes QuickPlayer software has been selected by Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecom operator, as part of a pilot of an IPTV-based, multi-screen MOD service. To be launched in Q3 2012, the new service will allow Chunghwa Telecom customers to download an app from Google Play and use this to replay content from this summer’s Olympic Games on their Android smartphone or tablet.
Chunghwa Telecom chose QuickPlayer as the basis for this app because it delivers high performance and maximum market reach. QuickPlayer covers all versions of the Android OS from 2.1 to 4.x, as well as a wide range of devices from single core 600 MHz handsets up to multi-core processor (> 1 GHz) phones and tablets. Furthermore, the software adapts automatically to device capabilities and variations in network bandwidth, so consumers enjoy high quality viewing at all times. The software also features NXP Software’s QuickStart technology which ensures fast video start-up and zapping, making the mobile experience close to that of watching at home.
Chunghwa Telecom was one of the first companies in Asia Pacific to launch IPTV services and is Taiwan’s leading telecom services provider with over 1 million subscribers. Its new service aims to capitalize on the exponential growth of IPTV and offer consumers access to content on any screen.
“Sports content is compelling to watch at any time and wherever you are, which makes it ideal for mobile services. And the excitement of the recent 2012 Olympic Games provides a unique opportunity for an evaluation of multi-screen adoption among our customers. LifeVibes QuickPlayer software helps us deliver the scalability, speed and quality that are key to meet the expectations of a large subscriber base,” says Dr. Ching Min Cheng, Managing Director Multimedia department, Northern Taiwan Business Group, Chunghwa Telecom.
Chunghwa is rolling out the full MOD deployment in conjunction with Ericsson, who is supplying a complete end-to-end next generation IPTV solution. This solution is designed to meet the growing demand for IPTV and multi-screen, interactive multimedia services. Industry experts have predicted that the global IPTV market will expand from 35 million subscribers in 2010 to 155 million in 2016, with 70% of this growth coming from the Asia Pacific region alone.*
